How to choose a memorable business phone number
Your phone number is on your van, your website and every card you hand out. A memorable one gets you calls from people who didn’t write it down. Here is how to choose well.
Say it out loud
Customers often hear your number before they see it, on the radio, over the phone or from a friend. Pairs and repeats (0777 88 99 00) are easy to say and remember. Avoid numbers that mix many different digits.
Put the pattern at the end
People remember the start (07…) and the end. A strong ending such as …000, …777 or …2020 does most of the work, and these numbers cost less than ones patterned all the way through.
Match the digits to your business
247 for a 24-hour locksmith or recovery firm, a trade’s favourite digits, the year you started, or a number that spells out your opening line in an advert. A meaningful number gives people a reason to remember it.
Think about the whole team
If several people take calls, sequential numbers (serial numbers) share the same stem, so customers only have to remember one. Matching pairs suit partners who share a business.
Make sure you own it
Buy the number on a SIM in your company’s name and port it to your business plan with a PAC code. You can then move it to any network in future without changing your number. See our PAC guide, or browse 247 numbers and the full shop.
A mobile number or an 0333 or 0800 number?
Non-geographic numbers (0333, 0345, 0800) suit call centres with many lines. For most small businesses a memorable mobile number works better: it takes texts and WhatsApp messages, it rings the phone in your pocket without a forwarding service, and calls to it come out of the caller’s normal inclusive minutes. If you later grow into a call system, a mobile number can still be kept for direct contact.
Before you order: a five-minute check
- Say the number out loud to someone and ask them to repeat it back a minute later.
- Write it the way it will appear on your van or sign, and check the pattern is obvious at a glance.
- Search the digits online to make sure they are not tied to another business nearby.
- Check the number is in a mobile range, not an 070 forwarding range.
- Decide whether it will replace your current number or sit alongside it, then follow the buying guide.
Use it the same way everywhere
Once you have the number, show it identically on your van, cards, website, invoices and listings, grouped so the pattern stands out. Add it to your Google Business Profile and directory listings in exactly the same form. Consistent details help customers recognise you and help search engines match your listings to your business.
Quick answers
Can several staff share one memorable number? One number rings one SIM; for a team, use a serial set that shares the same stem.
Can I keep my existing contract? Yes. Move the new number onto it with a PAC code.
Which digits suit a trade? 247 for emergency call-outs, a repeat such as AA BB for anything said on the radio, or your founding year.
